Bound for Broadway

Catchy songs, the thrill of the stage, dance extravaganzas, and the power of speech, and you are there. Broadway. And you will do anything to make it happen. Audition, audition, audition. Practice, study, memorize, lessons, acting classes, dance classes. Excitement, tears, self-doubt, start again. Singing works sometimes, maybe all of the time,... 'hey, did I sound ok in that audition?', you ask yourself over the proverbial espresso coffee shortly after the audition to soothe your soul...'what about the guy on the audition panel who didn't seem to notice anything was doing...I want this part more than anything in the world!'. And you dream, and you know inside yourself that you are there, that you are ready. Or at least you feel that you are really ready this time to.... to what? 'What if, what if, it doesn't happen? What if they don't like me? What if I think I am better than I actually am, ... oh, how do I know if I am really the real deal?' Consoling with friends, gaining encouragement from your teachers, looking into the universe and asking 'why'? Back on the path to searching for answers, searching for auditions, springing for everything in sight...'ah, a small part! but I want the lead, I always want the lead'. and so it goes.

We can't control the audition panel. We can't control a lot of things when it comes to auditioning, but we can positively improve ourselves as singers, actors, triple threats, and our auditioning skills. It's never just about the audition. It's about who we are. When the stresses of auditions and opportunities arise, many artists find themselves digging deep into their souls about what they are about, what they are doing, why they are doing it, assessing their stage of development, their craft and their offering to the world.

Passion is key. Determination is required. Deliberate pursuit of honing one's Art is necessary. Gain the skills. Be the best you can be, and don't settle for anything less. Keep going. Don't give up. Don't ever give up. Follow your heart. Along the way, have compassion for self, compassion for others. Learn the biz inside and out, and go out there and live your dream. - Zoe Vandermeer, copyright October 2025
